Talon Cress is an artist and freelance graphic designer based in Odessa, Texas. He earned dual bachelor’s degrees in Art and Organismal Biology from the University of Texas Permian Basin, an interdisciplinary background that has shaped both his artistic practice and his approach to observing the natural world.

Cress’s work is rooted in a longstanding fascination with nature and the environments that surround him. Much of his earlier work focused on the landscapes of West Texas, using vibrant color, expressive mark-making, and heightened scale to transform familiar places into immersive representations of the emotional experience of nature. Rather than simply documenting the landscape, he is interested in how a place can be experienced, in vibrant color, light, atmosphere, and form that communicate a sense of place, familiarity, isolation, or connection.

As his practice continues to develop, Cress has begun shifting his attention from the broader landscape toward the individual organisms within it. Plants, insects, animals, and other often overlooked forms of life have become an increasingly important part of his work. Drawing from his background in organismal biology, he is exploring ways to bring the observational precision of scientific illustration into an expressive fine art practice, finding significance in the small and easily overlooked.

His practice continues to move between scientific curiosity and personal interpretation, with an ongoing interest in revealing the complexity of the ordinary.
